Katie & Nick Stowe

Married May 19, 2012

Nick and Katie got engaged overlooking the water on their favorite rock cliff in Knights Ferry.  As the wedding preparations began, anyone who knows Katie knew she’d pick blue…and she did…navy blue with accents of gray and pink.  The bride and groom also incorporated Nick’s love for woodwork.  He handcrafted the appetizer table, the buffet table, a beautiful chandelier that hung over the head table, and a one of a kind carved heart that they used as a guest book where guests signed their names in sharpie.Stowe wedding_Grover Photography

Sarah & Jeremy DeBoer

Married July 7, 2012

Imagine going through the work of planning your dream wedding.  Then, imagine that whole plan literally going up in flames.

That is exactly what happened to Sarah Bollerud and Jeremy DeBoer of Modesto on one fateful night this past December when they found out that the McHenry Mansion had caught fire.sarah&Jeremy_Photo209-BridalCouturemag

Sarah (former cover model for Bridal Couture Magazine) and Jeremy had booked the mansion as a venue for their summer wedding after considering other options.  “We chose the mansion for the price, location, and the adorable backyard. I grew up in Modesto, and he grew up in Hickman, so we definitely wanted somewhere close to our families and friends.  We took half of our wedding money and bought a home pretty close by, so we originally wanted to have the wedding reception in the backyard of our new home, but figured the price and location, we could not beat it,” said Sarah.Sarah&Jeremy-Photo209-BridalCouturemag

For Sarah, the text from a friend letting her know that the mansion was on fire hit particularly close to home.  “I have lived in a home that caught fire so that is not a good feeling,” she said.  “Seeing  the fire trucks and all the people was very scary. A little too reminiscent of what I have already been through. Then to realize what has been lost to Modesto was sad as well.”

The McHenry Mansion has survived a storied existence since it was built in 1883.  At one point, it housed a sanitarium and for an even longer period of time, it served as an apartment complex.  Through it all, the mansion still stands and serves as a reminder that much like a marriage, change and hardship can be overcome with care and dedication.

Sarah and Jeremy were married as planned on July 7th under a beautiful summer sky during a ceremony that was designed to be a casual celebration of their love for 160 of their closest family members and friends to enjoy.  White paper lanterns and crystal chandeliers created a soft blanket of light that reflected gently off the reinvigorated mansion that was even fully dressed in it’s patriotic red, white, and blue bunting for the occasion.
