Is the internet friend or foe when buying your wedding gown online?

With almost 10 years of designer wedding gown experience, I have watched the
unconventional approach of internet shopping recently gain popularity among younger brides. Many brides turn to on-line shopping because they think it will save them time and money.  Simply using Google search ‘buy wedding dress online’ yields 7 million hits for new and used name brand gowns, all being sold at half the price. The web is being utilized as a digital shopping cart for what you think are your favorite styles and designers at heavily discounted prices. But are you really getting the designer gown you think you’ve ordered?

Browsing the web on your laptop or mobile device, downloading apps, pinning, tagging, etc. is the new norm. So it may seem natural as you end up on a “designer discount” site selecting your dream dress from a bunch of photo-shopped images.  Before you know it your credit card number and address are all that remain before finalizing your big purchase.  In as little as two weeks you can have the UPS guy at your doorstep with a box delivered straight from who knows where. It may seem painless and easy on the wallet but realistically you not only put yourself at risk of receiving a faux designer gown but you end up robbing yourself of a gigantic piece of your overall wedding experience…Haven’t you been watching ‘Say YES to the dress’?!

 

Walking into a bridal store and being treated like the queen you’re about to become is something every woman must experience. Most retailers pride themselves in smothering you with love and top notch quality customer service when making this monumental decision. Having that friendly bridal consultant on hand at your disposal is invaluable, supplying you with great advice, product knowledge and an honest opinion. Getting fitted correctly and accurately is a crucial aspect of falling in love with your wedding dress. Along with having those agonizing measurements taken, you find out what fit and shape flatters your body type.  I’ve been selling bridal gowns to retailers for many years and have witnessed that the majority of women who think they know what they want, end up buying the complete opposite.

Setting up an appointment to get fitted for your dress gives you the ability to evaluate different styles.  Trying on multiple brands and styles allows you to make an educated choice with your money. Buying your gown online often is an impulsive decision, one you are likely to regret.  There is too much room for error if you don’t know what you’re getting. What if it’s the wrong size or color? What if it’s delivered late or damaged? Maybe it’s not even the style or designer you paid for, not to mention the hassle with credit card fraud!!

Don’t be that bride who ends up posting her horror story online because she thought she was saving money. In the end, you get what you pay for. Keep in mind, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Tips for ensuring you’re getting the right gown.
1. If you have found the designer you love in bridal magazines and on the web, review that designer’s “Authorized Retailers” or “Store Locator” section on their website. These are the only locations authorized to sell this particular designer’s collections. While you can find gently used designer gowns online through various sites, purchasing a new designer bridal gown should only be done at an authorized location.
2. Beware of any price that’s too good to be true.
3. Always check the return and privacy policies. If they are confusing or seem ambiguous, you could be dealing with a scam artist.
4. If you are really on the hunt for a bargain, shop the bridal salon sample sales. These sales are the best way to buy couture on a budget.
